Bird Prevention Methods

The most common bird prevention methods are spring wire systems, point prevention and net prevention. Below we explain in more detail how each of these methods work:

Spring Wire Systems

Net PreventionSpring wire systems help guard against pigeons and other birds perching on your window sills, ledges, beams and gutters on your property.

This is an extremely versatile solution and can be installed anywhere your property including window ledges, beams, gutters, pipes, signs, roof ridges and rails.

A stainless steel post is installed into the structure and a thin strand of stainless steel wire is attached and tensioned with a spring. This wire stands just above the area in which the birds have been roosting and prevents them from perching in future. Several strands of wire can be used together, creating an exclusion zone for the pest birds.

The stainless steel posts are usually installed by drilling into the structure but if the structure is delicate, an architectural adhesive can also be used to secure them in position.

This is an effective and humane way of keeping pigeons and other pest birds from your building.

Point Prevention

Net PreventionLike, the spring wire system above, point prevention is also and effective and humane way of preventing pigeons and other birds from perching on your building.

This method of prevention works by upright wires (or points) attached to a stabilised base that is usually glued to the surface with with a silicone adhesive or other suitable fixings. Sometimes referred to as bird spikes, these points make it extremely uncomfortable and even impossible birds to land on the surface.

The tips of the points are cut flat to ensure that birds are not injured if they try to land on a surface protected by points, they will simply fly away and look to perch elsewhere.

Point prevention works best when buildings are suffering from a low to medium threat of pigeons or birds. In certain situations where there are large flocks, the birds can attempt to break down the points. Your pest control specialist will survey your building and recommend the best solution for your needs.

Net Prevention

Net PreventionBird netting is one of the effective and commonly used methods for preventing birds from roosting in urban areas. If installed well, bird netting can last a long time and also appear almost invisible from the ground.

Bird netting is normally made from one of two types of material - either knotted polyethylene or knotless polypropylene. The materials are chemically inert, extremely durable and UV light stabilised. They can also be made Fire Retardant to BS 5827 PART2.

The netting is also available in three colours and your pest control expert will advise on the best one to use to blend in with your building. The colours are black, stone and translucent.
